A Bigger Splash

A Bigger Splash was a short-lived British guitar band that emerged during the mid-1980s, blending melodic indie pop, jangly guitars and the fading echoes of post-punk into a sound that fit comfortably alongside the independent music coming out of the UK at the time. Although the group never reached a wide audience, their recordings captured the spirit of a period when countless bands were exploring bright guitar hooks, understated melodies and thoughtful songwriting outside the mainstream.

The band's core lineup featured Paul Baverstock on lead guitar and vocals, Ray Edwards on bass and lead vocals, and Jim Honeywood on drums and vocals. Songwriting duties were shared by Baverstock and Edwards, giving the material a balance between ringing guitar-driven arrangements and melodic bass lines. The vocal interplay between the two songwriters added another dimension to the band's recordings, while Honeywood's solid drumming provided a steady foundation that kept the songs moving without overshadowing their melodic focus.

A Bigger Splash recorded with producer Peter Smith, with production credits shared between Smith and the band. Their recordings reflected the independent approach common among British underground groups of the era, favouring clean guitar textures, understated production and carefully constructed songs over studio excess. The band's sound drew from the growing indie guitar movement while retaining traces of new wave and post-punk influences, resulting in music that felt both melodic and slightly introspective.
