Deviated Instinct

Deviated Instinct are an English extreme metal band formed in Norwich in 1984. They are considered pioneers of both crust punk and death metal, driven by an Antisect and Amebix obsession, plus the fledgling thrash and death metal scenes filtering into their anarcho punk background. Their first EP, 'Welcome to the Orgy', was released by Peaceville Records, which released the majority of their albums. The band disbanded in 1991, but reunited in late 2007. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA]

Claude Raines

Claude Raines were an US based guitar-driven post-punk band from Rochester, NY that only released a self-titled album in 1987. Rochester must’ve been a great breeding ground for awesome, underrated post-punk, between this LP and of course, Eleven Pond. In fact, Cedric Herrera, vocalist for this band, was also the singer of Red Violet Red, the band that preceded Eleven Pond. The closest touchstones for this 1987 LP include The Church, The Chameleons, Psychedelic Furs, and The Snake Corps, complete with the big guitar driven sound of all those bands. Perhaps a bit of a R.E.M. / Grapes of Wrath vibe as well, just a bit heavier than either of those bands tend to run. [SOURCE: SYSTEMS OF ROMANCE

Brighter Death Now

Brighter Death Now is the artist name under which Roger Karmanik (b. 1965 as Roger Karlsson), the founder of the Swedish record label Cold Meat Industry, releases death industrial, power electronics and dark ambient music. Whereas early Brighter Death Now recordings tended to be largely instrumental and atmospherically oriented, present-day releases often feature screamed vocals, distorted beyond comprehension. Throughout its history, Karmanik has kept his music's thematic elements focused on such topics as child molestation, sadism, and psychosis. 'The Great Death' trilogy and 'May All Be Dead' have become rare collectors items, and are sought after by many Brighter Death Now fans. Roger Karmanik has been active under other names such as Lille Roger (Swedish for "Little Roger") and Bomb The Daynursery. In 2009, Karmanik remixed the short films of Jason LaRay Keener as projection for live shows. Karmanik closed down Cold Meat Industries around the beginning of 2014 as he expressed that he was suffering mentally and physically from the stress of running the label. By the end of 2014, Karmanik had fully immersed himself within the shroud of Brighter Death Now and announced the creation of his new label Familjegraven whose sole purpose is to release his own projects, including rarities, reissues, and new recordings. Autumn Poison

Autumn Poison were an anarcho punk group from Southend, and were formed around the core members of Graham Burnett, Sheena Fulton and Paul Brown. They existed between 1980-1985 and played many concerts in and around Southend, often with the likeminded Kronstadt Uprising. When they first formed, they were originally called Enola Death, but soon changed their name to Autumn Poison. Graham had switched to vocals after previously playing drums in Stripey Zebras, whom had played many great shows in 1980 around the area.

The band were an important part of the "cassette culture" of the 1980's (Graham ran his own label, New Crimes Tapes, that was affiliated with his fanzine, New Crimes) and released two key cassettes on New Crimes Tapes. The first 'Songs of Anger, Songs of Hope', was originally issued with a free lyric booklet and badge and was a good document of the first phase of the bands career, featuring songs such as "Police Force", "The Sun Says" and "Fox Hunting". With the key line up of Graham and Sheena on vocals, Julian Ware-Lane on guitar, Steve on bass and Kevin Hickling on drums, the band played a lot of concerts in the period, often in conjunction with the Kronstadt Uprising, many of which were benefits for the CND or local Animal Rights groups. Key shows of the time would have included The Thorpedene Community Centre gig with Kronstadt and Hagar The Womb on the 14.08.82, a local headliner at The Cliff Hotel with The Committee on the 06.08.83 and a gig at The Grand Hotel in Leigh with The Omega Tribe and Youth in Asia on the 25.09.83.

The band eventually disbanded around 1985, but fast forwarding to 1994, Graham and Paul reformed the band in order to record a track for 'Bullshit Detector Volume #4', a compilation put together by Resistance Productions, a Swiss-based Anarcho Punk record and cassette label, who wanted to continue the tradition of the earlier Crass compiled 'Bullshit Detector' Volumes. (Autumn Poison's track was notable too for including a sample of Crass drummer Penny Rimbaud). After Autumn Poison disbanded, Graham and Paul would go on to occasionally collaborate under the title of Love Over Law, and released several cassette albums in the late 1980's early 1990's. 3d Picnic

3d Picnic was an alternative pop-rock band from Los Angeles formed from the ashes of Plain Wrap, a Huntington beach-punk band. The band was led by guitarist/vocalist Dallas Don Burnet, who decided to end the band in 1992. Musically, one thing that separates Picnic from other alterna-rock combos that were playing the L.A./Hollywood scene in the early '90s is an appreciation of rockabilly and Bakersfield honky tonk. Anyone who has spent a lot of time listening to Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, or Rose Maddox will notice the Bakersfield influence. Picnic doesn't always employ that rockabilly/Bakersfield influence, but it's an effective tool when the Angelinos use it. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

Emily

Purveyors of sometimes ethereal genius with moments that can grow wings and fly, or grow horns and charge, depending on their mood / mode. A percussive assault that often puts in mind of Big Star's magisterial "You Can't Have Me" with its runaway optimistic negativity, can switch abruptly into cathedral reverberation, as Emily become immersed in their effervescing style, an iridescent arc of sparkler fiery kisses on the heavens. The former mood / mode often makes think of Ollie Jackson as some sort of Soul brother to Tony France, as Emily metamorphose their brass backed masterworks into Stockholm Monstrous swirls of breathtaking intensity. The latter mode / mood puts in mind of some Scott Walker figure, with Emily swelling with strings and orchestral woodwind into epic proportions, again snatching my breath away, just so. Also, it's the manner in which a song like "Stumble" can respond to both such treatments, can ebb and flow, swell and subside with such immense majesty that it makes me bracket it in some sort of ultimately irrelevant manner with my most revered pop/rock moments. The Jasmine Minks' "Cry For A Man", The Velvet Underground's "Heroin", The Byrds' "Eight Miles High" or Hurrah!'s "Celtic". [SOURCE: BUSSTOPLABEL.COM

The Subhumans

Maverick Canadian punk rockers The Subhumans (not to be confused with the British Subhumans) formed around the initial core of vocalist Brian Goble (aka Wimpy Roy), guitarist Mike Graham, drummer Ken Montgomery (aka Dimwit), and bass player Gerry Hannah (aka Gerry Useless) in the western city of Vancouver, playing their first show on July 1, 1978, the same year they released their first single, 'Death to the Sickoids'. Montgomery left the group the following year and was replaced by Jim Imagawa, who contributed to both the band's self-titled EP and its legendary 'Incorrect Thoughts' LP. Their 1981 follow-up, 'No Wishes, No Prayers', saw the departure of Imagawa and Hannah, making room for new bassist Ron Allan and third drummer Randy Bowman. The new lineup was short-lived, however, as the band broke up the following year. The group re-formed in 1995 to promote the "best-of" collection 'Pissed Off...with Good Reason!', and again in 2006 for an all-new studio album, 'New Dark Age Parade'. The latter album, released on Alternative Tentacles, saw original members Goble, Graham, and Hannah back together again, rounded out by drummer Jon Card (SNFU, D.O.A.). Reunited, the group found increasing demand for its first album in CD form, so Alternative Tentacles set out to re-release 'Incorrect Thoughts'. However, in a strange twist of fate, the original members of the band found themselves unable to prove that they held the rights to the album. Not wanting to pursue the rights legally, The Subhumans recorded a second version of their debut, titled 'Same Thoughts Different Day', which was released in 2010. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

The Hepburns

The Hepburns are a Welsh indie band from Llanelli. They formed in January 1985 and have recorded eleven albums, two EPs, one single, and four BBC sessions in their 32-year career. They have been signed to Berkeley-based label Radio Khartoum since the 1990s, following a two-year tenure at London’s Cherry Red Records from 1987–1989. They toured the US and Scandinavia in 2007.

Born of the post-punk, indie boom of the early-80s, but with their roots in the 1960s, their sound is an amalgam of indie guitar pop with Burt Bacharach, Jake Thackray, and Jonathan Richman, a style fast becoming known in Carmarthenshire as "Thackarich". The current line-up is: Matt Jones (guitar, vocals), Mike Thomas (bass), Les Mun (drums), Sue Reece (keyboards, flute), and Cris Haines (brass). For fans of él Records, The Lucksmiths, The Monochrome Set, The Smiths, The Specials, Momus, John Barry and Jake Thackray. Their 11th studio album, 'In the Mean Time', a wry look at a post-Brexit, post-Trump world and the plight of the former working classes in the late-capitalist era, was released on April 6th, 2018. Suicidal Tendencies

Judging from their name, Suicidal Tendencies were never afraid of a little controversy. Formed in Venice, California, during the early '80s, the group's leader from the beginning was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialized in vicious hardcore early on -building a huge following among skateboarders, lending a major hand in the creation of skatepunk- before turning their focus eventually to thrash metal. Early on, the group (whose original lineup included Muir, guitarist Grant Estes, bassist Louiche Mayorga, and drummer Amery Smith) found it increasingly difficult to book shows, due to rumors of its members' affiliation with local gangs and consistent violence at their performances. The underground buzz regarding Suicidal Tendencies grew too loud for labels to ignore though, as the quartet signed on with the indie label Frontier; issuing Muir and company's classic self-titled debut in 1983. The album quickly became the best-selling hardcore album up to that point; its best-known track, "Institutionalized," was one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive substantial airplay on MTV, and was eventually used in the Emilio Estevez cult classic movie "Repo Man", as well as in an episode for the hit TV show "Miami Vice" (for which the group made a cameo appearance).

Suicidal Tendencies proved influential for future speed/thrash metal bands, but despite their early success, their reputation preceded them, as no other record label was willing to take them on (in addition, Los Angeles banned the group from playing around this time, lasting until the early '90s). Not much was heard from the group for several years afterward (leading many to believe that Suicidal had broken up), but Muir and company eventually found a home with Caroline Records. By this time, half of the original lineup had left; Muir and Mayorga were the only holdovers, while guitarist Rocky George and drummer R.J. Herrera rounded out the group. The year 1987 saw the release of Suicidal's sophomore release, 'Join the Army', which spawned another popular skatepunk anthem, "Possessed to Skate," as more and more metalheads began to be spotted in Suicidal's audience. Soon after, Suicidal were finally offered a major-label contract (with Epic), as another lineup change occurred: Mayorga exited the band, while newcomer Bob Heathcote took his spot, and a second guitarist, Mike Clark, was added as well. This Suicidal lineup's first album together, 1988's 'How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today', showed that their transformation from hardcore to heavy metal was now complete, as did a compilation of two earlier EPs, 1989's 'Controlled by Hatred/Feel Like Shit...Déjà Vu'.

Suicidal's first release of the new decade, 1990's 'Lights, Camera, Revolution', was another success; its video for the explosive "You Can't Bring Me Down" received repeated airings on MTV's "Headbanger's Ball" program, while the album (in addition to the 'Controlled by Hatred' comp) would be certified gold in the U.S. a few years later. The release also signaled the arrival of new bassist Robert Trujillo, whose penchant for funk added a new element to the group's sound. The group tried to broaden its audience even further by opening a string of arena shows for prog-metalists Queensrÿche during the summer of 1991. Their next release, 1992's 'The Art of Rebellion', proved to be one of the most musically experimental albums of their career. Muir and Trujillo also teamed up around this time for a funk-metal side project, Infectious Grooves (including several other participants, such as Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins) and issued a debut release, 'The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move'. Upset that the group's classic debut had been out of print for several years by this point, Muir decided to re-record the entire record with Suicidal's '90s lineup under the title of 'Still Cyco After All These Years'.

But after one more release, 1994's 'Suicidal for Life', Suicidal Tendencies decided to hang it up. A pair of compilations were issued in 1997: a best-of set, 'Prime Cuts', plus 'Friends & Family'. Muir and Trujillo continued to issue further Infectious Grooves releases ('Sarsippius' Ark' and 'Groove Family Cyco'), in addition to Muir pursuing a solo career under the alias of Cyco Miko ('Lost My Brain Once Again') and Trujillo touring and recording as part of Ozzy Osbourne's solo band (appearing on Osbourne's 2001 release 'Down to Earth'). Muir formed a new version of Suicidal Tendencies in the late '90s (with Clark being the only other familiar face), resulting in such further studio releases as 1999's 'Freedumb' and 2000's 'Free Your Soul and Save My Mind'. Muir and Trujillo joined forces once more for a fourth Infectious Grooves studio release in 2000, 'Mas Borracho', while another Cyco Miko release surfaced, 'Schizophrenic Born Again Problem Child', along with a follow-up to their earlier compilation, 'Friends & Family, Vol. 2'.

Busy with myriad side projects, the band wouldn't release another studio album until 2013. The aptly named '13' was recorded over a ten-year period, and would be the group's only studio album with guitarist Nico Santora, bassist Steve Bruner, and drummer Eric Moore. Muir brought in guitarist Jeff Pogan, bassist Ra Díaz, and drummer Dave Lombardo for the band's 12th studio long-player, 2016's 'World Gone Mad'. March 2018 saw the band issue the EP 'Get Your Fight On!'. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC
