Sad Lovers And Giants

British post-punk group Sad Lovers And Giants, based in Watford, Hertfordshire, featured a line-up comprising Garce Allard (vocals), Tristan Garel-Funk (guitar), David Woods (keyboards), Cliff Silver (bass) and Nigel Pollard (drums). After the exposure of early singles 'Colourless Dream' and 'Lost In A Moment', it was the release of 'Man Of Straw' and the accompanying 'Feeding The Flame' that really established the group as masters of the double-edged lyric and sweeping, emotional textures of guitar and keyboard: 'Like confession whispered slowly, Hate's a word that's spoken softly, Standing lonely trusting no one, In disarray with collar undone'. 

Guitarist Garel-Funk and drummer Pollard left soon after to form The Snake Corps, and the band had already fallen apart by the time the 'Total Sound' mini-album, recorded live for broadcast on Dutch radio in 1983, was released. Another posthumous release, 'In The Breeze', comprising demos, live tracks and alternative versions recorded for BBC disc jockey John Peel, predated its release. The group was reactivated in 1987, releasing 'White Russians', while only Pollard and Allard were still in place for the subsequent final albums.
