Qué Bono

Qué Bono were formed in Lancashire, England, in the early 80's, comprising Alan Maskell (guitar), Jane Mulvihill (vocals), Simon Hall (bass) and Pete Mulvihill (drums). Though they only recorded one single, Qué Bono's name is often referred to in trivia quizzes and in the context of disc jockey John Peel's career. The reason was that the band's singer managed to pass a copy of their demo tape to Kenny Dalglish of Liverpool Football Club, in order that he pass it on to Peel for airplay. Given that Dalglish has long been Peel's greatest idol, it was felt that he would not be able to pass up such outrageous and innovative marketing. A session duly followed, redorded at Langham on 1 June 1981. However, the producer Dale Griffin despaired of failing monitors which nearly forced the abandonment of the recordings. It was eventually broadcast on 16 June, but shortly afterwards the group were no more. A self-financed single was mis-pressed, and after a blazing row, Maskell walked out on the band who broke up shortly thereafter. [SOURCE: THE VIRGIN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF INDIE & NEW WAVE]
